Google Celebrates Chinese Australian Surgeon Dr. Victor Chang With A Doodle

On the day that would have been Dr. Victor Chang’s 87th birthday, Google is honoring the Chinese-Australian surgeon.

Chang is best known for developing the St. Vincent’s artificial heart valve and for being a pioneer in the fields of cardiac and transplant surgery.

Shanghai-born, he developed an interest in medicine after learning that his mother had breast cancer. He trained at St. Vincent Hospital, attended the University of Sydney, and held positions in a number of hospitals across the globe.

He was employed as a cardiothoracic surgeon at St. Vincent Hospital when he returned there in 1972.

Chang also performed a heart transplant on Fiona Coote, a 14-year-old patient, in 1984; Coote was the youngest patient in Australia to undergo the procedure and the longest-surviving recipient of a heart transplant. Chang also installed the St. Vincent’s artificial heart valve.

He also established the Victor Chang Foundation in 1984, which provides funding to train surgeons from Southeast Asia and sends them to St. Vincent Hospital for heart transplant training.

In 1986, Chang received the Australian of the Year award.

He was shot and killed in 1991 while commuting to work on a suburban Sydney street.

Chang won the People’s Choice Award for Australian of the Century in 1999.
