The James Madison men’s basketball team stunned No. 4 Michigan State on Monday night at the Breslin Center with an overtime victory thanks to stifling defense and 45 points apiece from T.J. Bickerstaff and Terrence Edwards Jr.

The victory was only the second top-25 result for the Dukes, after their 1992 triumph over Cal, and it was JMU’s highest-ranked victory ever. In addition, JMU became the first squad since 2001 to defeat a team ranked among the top five in the AP preseason during a home opener.

Edwards Jr. scored a team-high 24 points to lead three Dukes in double figures. In his JMU debut, Bickerstaff recorded a double-double with 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Michael Green III chipped in with 13 points, 11 of which came after the break.

With less than 90 seconds remaining and trailing 68-64, Noah Freidel’s two free throws and a Bickerstaff layup forced overtime with the score tied at 68. Following an MSU free throw that tied the game at 73, Edwards Jr.’s layup put the Dukes ahead by two points, and Raekwon Horton’s three-pointer gave JMU the lead at 78-74.

With three seconds remaining, Michigan State cut the lead to 78-76. A free throw by Bickerstaff put the game at three points, but the Spartans mishandled the ball in the closing seconds, giving the Dukes the victory.

Tyson Walker led the Spartans in scoring with 35 points and six steals, and Coen Carr chipped in with 14 points.

The Dukes held MSU to just 36% shooting, including 1 of 20 from beyond the arc, and outrebounded the Spartans 51–48 overall. Over the course of the 45-minute game, JMU held a lead of up to 13 points and led for 28:33 of that time. MSU never led by more than six points and only held the lead for 10:22.
