Beth Mead Finds The Net For The First Time Since Injury In Arsenal’s Victory

Beth Mead marked her return to form by netting her first Women’s Super League goals in over a year, securing a brace in the first half as Arsenal clinched their eighth consecutive victory against West Ham United at Meadow Park.

In the 18th minute, Mead, recently recalled by England after an 11-month injury absence, skillfully curled the ball in to double Arsenal’s advantage. Four minutes before halftime, she added a second goal from close range, bringing the score to 3-0.

Arsenal initially took the lead with Frida Maanum’s angled long-range effort, which deceived West Ham’s goalkeeper Megan Walsh on her debut. Despite Viviane Asseyi’s header hitting the post for West Ham, and Asseyi striking the woodwork again with a long-distance shot in the second half, they were unable to equalize.

Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger thwarted Isibeal Atkinson’s late attempt, and despite a scramble from a corner, Hawa Cissoko couldn’t bundle the ball over the line for a consolation goal.

Beth Mead, making her second consecutive start after recovering from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament that sidelined her during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, showcased her prowess. Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema, returning from a similar injury, made her second appearance as a late second-half substitute.

With the international break looming, Arsenal, now set for a top-of-the-table clash against Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on December 10, find themselves three points behind the reigning champions.
