Aston Villa Moves To 5th After Smashing Win Against Fulham

Aston Villa are fifth in the Premier League after a convincing win against Fulham. This is their 13th consecutive win at Villa Park.

Villa have opened the season with six straight wins at home for the first time since 1932/33, one point behind Spurs in fourth and they would be looking to capitalize when they visit Tottenham after the international break.

In the 27th minute, Antonee Robinson gave the hosts the lead, after Youri Tielemans’ cross towards Moussa Diaby went off the Fulham player and into the net.

Just before halftime, Aston Villa extended their lead through the captain who fired a low strike beyond Bernd Leno and into the bottom corner.

After the break, Fulham looked to catch up as Iwobi and Jimenez teamed up to create some chances but neither could get the ball in the net.

In the 64th minute, Villa made it three as Leon Bailey, just off the bench, crossed the ball to Watkins who used his side foot to send in the 11th club goal of the season in all competitions.

Raul Jimenez pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 70th minute, ending a run of 33 Premier League games without a goal since March 2022.

John McGinn was feeling optimistic after the game when asked about his team finishing in the top five.

“It’s the next challenge. Last season it was top 10 but we got into Europe. We have to respect the teams who have been there for years. Fulham will cause a lot of teams problems,” he said.

Speaking after the match, Aston Villa’s boss, Unai Emery had this to say.

“It’s special for everyone. We connected very well with our supporters. We had control of the game in the first half. It was important for us to get the first goal [in the second half] but when they scored we needed to try to control the game and be consistent in our game plan and we were.

“We are the best-scoring team in the league. It’s important because we’re showing our potential but we have to be stronger defensively.

“We had more control in the first half. We lost control of the game [at one stage]. They were trying to attack us and get behind and push a lot with some players.”
