Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos Leaves Seattle For Miami

Having started Amazon in his garage in Seattle in 1994, Jeff Bezos is relocating to Miami to be closer to his parents and his space company Blue Origin.

Bezos revealed the choice late on Thursday on Instagram. The post featured a video of him visiting one of Amazon’s first offices, the garage of his rented house in the Bellevue, Washington, suburb of Seattle. It was there that Bezos began Amazon’s 1995 existence as an online bookseller before turning it into a massive retail and cloud computing conglomerate.

“I’ve lived in Seattle longer than I’ve lived anywhere else and have so many amazing memories here,” Bezos wrote. “As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me. Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart.”

Seattle was altered by Amazon’s explosive expansion, especially in the South Lake Union neighborhood, which is home to the company’s headquarters. Its growth contributed to Seattle’s transformation into a tech hub, bringing in a large number of highly paid tech workers but also increasing homelessness and rents.

In 2021, Bezos resigned as CEO of Amazon, handing the reins to Andy Jassy, a former cloud executive. Bezos became the board’s executive chair of Amazon.

Following his resignation as CEO of Amazon, Bezos has dedicated more of his time to personal endeavors, including the Washington Post, which he purchased in 2013, the Earth Fund, and Blue Origin.

He’s been around outside of Seattle for a while now. Known as the “billionaire bunker,” Bezos recently paid $150 million for two adjacent properties in Miami’s Indian Creek Village. He has additional properties all over the world.
