Vegas Golden Knights Defeat Kraken To Open Cup Defense

The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Seattle Kraken 4-1 on Tuesday night in Las Vegas as Adin Hill saved 32 of 33 shots and Chandler Stephenson scored and added an assist. This marked the start of the Vegas Golden Knights’ Stanley Cup title defense.

For Vegas, who raised its first Stanley Cup banner in T-Mobile Arena during a glamorous pregame ceremony that saw the banner emerge from a huge slot machine on the ice, Jonathan Marchessault, Ivan Barbashev, and Jack Eichel all added goals, Mark Stone had two assists, and the team as a whole had a total of eight points.

Seattle, which is beginning the season with a three-game road trip that continues on Thursday against Nashville, scored thanks to Jared McCann. Philipp Grubauer made 24 saves in total.

When Stephenson, cutting down the right wing, tapped Brett Howden’s saucer feed from the left circle inside the right post, Vegas seized a 1-0 lead on its first shot of the year.

When Kraken forward Brandon Tanev attempted to dump the ball behind his own net at 14:57 in the first period, Marchessault’s stick’s blade deflected Tanev’s pass into the upper left corner of the goal past a surprised Grubauer. This boosted the Golden Knights’ lead to 2-0. Vegas’ season-opening goal came from Marchessault, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner in the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs, for the fourth consecutive year.

At the 1:20 mark of the second period, Barbashev increased the score to 3-0 by receiving a stretch pass from Brayden McNabb at the blue line, cutting off two Kraken defenders, and roofing a slap shot into the top right corner of the goal.

Midway through the second period, McCann, who is coming off a 40-goal season, received a pass from Jordan Eberle in the low slot and swiftly snapped a wrist shot past Hill’s glove side to cut the score to 3-1 for Seattle.

With 13:58 left in the third period, Howden committed an illegal shoulder check to the head of Tanev in the neutral zone, earning a five-minute major and a game penalty. Hill stopped six shots during the subsequent five-minute power play, but the Kraken were unable to take advantage of it.

With just 1:15 remaining, Eichel scored an empty-net goal to give the Golden Knights the victory.
