US Navy Warship Near Yemen Intercepts Multiple Missiles, US Authority Confirms

Several rockets were intercepted on Thursday close to the Yemeni shore by a US Navy Warship stationed in the Middle East, two US sources told CNN.

According to one of the officials, the Houthi militants, who are fighting in Yemen, are receiving support from Iran and are the ones who fired the missiles. Two or three missiles were intercepted, the second official said.

Later on Thursday, USS Carney shot down multiple drones and three land assault missiles launched by the Houthi rebels in Yemen, who are backed by Iran, according to Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder.

“This action was a demonstration of the integrated air and missile defense architecture that we built in the Middle East and that we are prepared to utilize whenever necessary to protect our partners and our interest in this important region,” he said at a news briefing. “There were no casualties to US forces and none that we know of to any civilians on the ground.”

The missiles and drones were launched from Yemen and were traveling north along the Red Sea, “potentially toward targets in Israel,” according to Ryder, who stated that the Pentagon could not determine with certainty what the missiles and drones were targeting at this time.

On Wednesday, the USS Carney crossed the Red Sea via the Suez Canal. The headquarters of US Fleet Forces stated on social media that it will “assist in ensuring maritime security and stability in the Middle East.”

The incident was one of many in recent days in which US outposts in Syria and Iraq were targeted by drones as regional tensions rose as Israel and Hamas’ conflict raged on.

“Minor injuries” were the consequence of the drone attacks that targeted the Syrian base, according to Ryder.

According to Ryder, two drones attacked the al-Tanf garrison in Syria on Wednesday, which is home to US and coalition personnel fighting ISIS. According to Ryder, two drones struck the base, one of which was destroyed and the other of which caused minor casualties to coalition personnel.

Early warning systems in Iraq suggested a potential threat was nearing the US military’s al-Asad airbase the same morning. Although there was no attack, Ryder reported that people took cover and that an American civilian contractor had a heart attack before passing away.

According to Ryder, US forces fought off three drones on Tuesday close to US and coalition positions in Iraq. Coalition soldiers suffered just minor wounds as a result of two of the drones targeting the al-Asad airbase. Additionally, Ryder reported that US soldiers shot down a drone close to Bashur airbase in northern Iraq, causing no harm to anyone.

In response to a question about whether the current conflict between Israel and Hamas and regional resentment of US support for Israel are connected to any of these assaults, Ryder stated that the US is currently investigating the matter.

In order to achieve this, Ryder added, Austin has made a number of phone conversations with Israeli and Arab officials, such as Prince Khalid bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates, and Emir Sheikh Tamim of Qatar. The purpose was to stress the significance of protecting civilians and to restate US support for Israel.

Austin also had a conversation on Thursday with Yoav Gallant, the Israeli Minister of Defense, with whom he has communicated often since the start of the conflict.
