Tyson Bagent To Start For Chicago Bears At New Orleans Saints; Fields Still Week To Week

When the Chicago Bears travel to play the New Orleans Saints in Week 9, rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent will start again in lieu of Justin Fields.

Fields, who is rehabilitating from a dislocated right thumb, is still “week-to-week,” according to coach Matt Eberflus on Monday. Bagent will start for Chicago until Fields returns to full health.

“He’s progressing,” Eberflus said when asked whether Fields has been able to throw two weeks after dislocating his thumb against the Minnesota Vikings. “I can just say that. I’m not going to get into particulars but he is progressing and he is improving. I can say that. So we like where it is right now.”

After Fields suffered the injury on October 15, the Bears decided not to place him on injured reserve. Eberflus stated on Monday that he anticipates Fields to make a comeback within the four games that players must miss while on injured reserve.

“I would say really, for him, it’s a week-to-week thing,” Eberflus said. “We’re hopeful that he’s coming back before that time frame. That’s what it was.”

In a 30-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night, Bagent, who had made his first start against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7, completed 25 of 37 passes for 232 yards and two interceptions.
