Suso Names £87m-Valued EPL Wizard Who ‘Stood Out’ During A Trial At Liverpool As A Teenager

Nearly ten years ago, two men who would be on different teams in a Champions League encounter on Tuesday night briefly shared the same Liverpool training pitch.

Suso, who had just turned 21 at the end of 2014, was still waiting for a significant breakthrough on Merseyside, but it never materialized. A very talented 15-year-old named Martin Odegaard was on trial at the club at the time and would go on to become a star in the Premier League.

The Spaniard has recounted how the current captain of the Gunners caught his eye during that period with the Reds. The two of them will square off against one other when Sevilla plays Arsenal tonight.

Suso told The Guardian: “When I was at Liverpool, Ødegaard came to try out with us for a week. It was that time when everyone wanted him. He trained with Madrid, with Liverpool and a few others.

“He stood out: left-footed, which I always notice more as a left-footer myself, hair like it is now. He had lots of ability. I don’t think I’ve seen him since.”

Ultimately, Real Madrid emerged victorious from a field of multiple prominent European teams to recruit Odegaard for a meager £2.3 million (BBC Sport). Although Odegaard never quite settled at the Bernabeu, he was the driving force behind Arsenal’s surprise Premier League title attempt the previous season.

Over the course of the previous 12 months, Liverpool supporters must have felt envious of Jurgen Klopp’s powerful Norwegian as he lit up the Emirates Stadium, seeing how miserably his midfield was faring.

The CIES Football Observatory estimates that he is currently worth an unbelievable €100 million (£87 million). This illustrates the kind of bargain the Reds could have gotten for the now 24-year-old if they had signed him shortly after that Merseyside trial camp in the mid-2010s.

Thank goodness, Jorg Schmadtke managed a successful summer transfer window that brought four new midfielders to Anfield, including Dominik Szoboszlai, who has won the Kop over with his performances and received high praise.

Even while there’s always a sense of what could have been with Odegaard and Liverpool, we can be confident that the manager had the players he needed to win many of the biggest club football titles when we consider the success we’ve had under Klopp.
