Sony Says PS5 Slim Will Still Support Expandable Storage

Sony has officially confirmed that its PS5 Slim system would preserve its expandable storage capabilities, giving gamers some consolation that they can still add more capacity to their console if they so choose.

A PS5 Slim official informed IGN via email that “there are no changes with the new model,” referring to the procedure of taking out the console’s back cover panel and manually adding an extra SSD.

In either case, the PS5 Slim will have more memory than the initial launch model; it will have 1TB of internal SSD storage as opposed to the initial launch model’s 825GB (of which only 667GB was usable).

However, those seeking to purchase the redesign will find the PS5 Slim’s continued support of expandable storage to be a huge benefit.

The option to add an M.2 SSD to increase the system’s storage is a nice feature, especially in light of the fact that a software update that enabled support for up to 8TB of additional SSD storage was rolled out last month. Many blockbuster games launching on Sony’s ninth-generation home console will have large file sizes.

Similar to the launch model, the PS5 won’t accept just any M.2 SSD.

Sony had previously said that the M.2 SSD must be PCIe Gen4 and that the read speeds must be at least 5,500MB/s, although multiple users have verified that M.2 SSDs with slower read speeds will still function inside the console.

Next month, Sony will unveil the PS5 Slim. For more information, see our article comparing the PS5 Slim against the Xbox Series consoles and the launch model. Check out the top PS5 SSD offers if you want to purchase a PS5 anytime soon (Slim or not).
