Russell Wilson Struggles In Loss To Kansas City Chiefs

Russell Wilson, the quarterback, was trying to make sense of one of the worst performances of his career — a 19-8 loss that dropped the Denver Broncos to 1-5 on Thursday at Arrowhead Stadium, a night when the struggling Denver Broncos defense played well enough to win against the potent Kansas City Chiefs.

“We had a chance. We’ve got to play better, cleaner,” a somewhat sullen Wilson said. “I’ve got to play better. That starts with me.”

In the first three games of the season, Wilson had two 300-yard passing performances and appeared to be settling into coach Sean Payton’s playbook. However, on Sunday, in the Broncos’ defeat to the New York Jets, Wilson struggled somewhat with a four-sack, 196-yard day.

The problems of 2022, when Wilson ended with a career-low 16 touchdown passes and a career-high 55 sacks, were revisited on Thursday.

Wilson completed 13 of 22 passes for 95 yards with a score and two interceptions against the Chiefs. For the first time in his 12-year career, Wilson ended the game with fewer than 150 passing yards and two interceptions.

On Thursday, Wilson was sacked four times and had four throws swatted away at the line of scrimmage.

The Broncos had eight total drives against the Chiefs that gained 34 yards or less, and they didn’t put together a scoring drive until the fourth quarter. Six minutes and seven seconds remained in the game when Courtland Sutton made a one-handed catch for a score.

All this on a night when the Chiefs’ offense was held to only one touchdown by the Broncos’ defense.

“Offensively we struggled throwing the ball, our third-down numbers were poor,” Payton said. “We had a game where we certainly played well enough defensively, but offensively … from a third-down perspective, keeping drives going, we struggled until late in the game … To win in our league, you’ve got to be better throwing the ball. I don’t think the wind was that big of a factor.”

“They did a lot of different things,” Wilson said of the Chiefs’ defense. “The first [interception] was on me. They made a great play on the ball that bounced up on [the second interception]. … That’s part of the game. … They made good plays tonight. They’re a good defense.”

With 20 starts under Wilson’s belt, Denver is currently 4-16. In order to acquire Wilson, the Broncos surrendered the Seattle Seahawks five draft picks, including two first-round and two second-round picks, along with three players in 2022.
