Real Madrid Held To A 1-1 Draw By Sevilla As Ancelotti Fumes

Real Madrid, the league leaders, rallied from behind to draw 1-1 with Sevilla on Saturday thanks to a late header from captain Dani Carvajal. David Alaba’s own goal had given the home team the lead.

Real now has 25 points from 10 games, three more than Girona, the season’s surprise gift, who will play bottom-place Almeria on Sunday. On 21 points, Barcelona sits third and takes on Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

It was an aggressive match in Seville, where two early disallowed attempts by Real Madrid after controversial refereeing calls angered them.

Throughout the first half, Carlo Ancelotti and the Real Madrid team frequently voiced their grievances to the referee. He denied Real’s allegation that Jesus Navas had fouled Vinicius Jr. in the penalty area, disregarded an early Federico Valverde goal for offside in the build-up, and declared he had halted play before Jude Bellingham scored.

Carvajal made a goalline clearance to deny an Ivan Rakitic shot as Sevilla began to claw their way back into the game.

For the first time since rejoining his childhood side, defender Sergio Ramos faced the squad that earned his name. He made a vital goalline clearance of his own to help Sevilla keep the score tied just before halftime.

Goalkeepers Kepa Arrizabalaga and Orjan Nyland both made outstanding saves to keep their teams in the game throughout the second half.

In the first minute, Real Madrid’s Kepa palmed a beautiful long-range effort by Ivan Rakitic around the post, while Sevilla’s Nyland produced an incredible reaction stop to deny a Rodrygo point-blank blast.

However, Real fell behind due to an own goal in the 74th minute by defender Alaba, who challenged forward Youssef En Nesyri.

But four minutes later, Carvajal tied the score with a powerful header from close range after a cross by Toni Kroos.

After a few skirmishes, the game grew more tense, resulting in five bookings in the closing minutes.

Ancelotti was clearly irritated after receiving a yellow card for his complaints.

The Italian said that he was attempting to avoid a suspension after claiming in his press conference that the referee “was right in every decision”.

“Irony is the only way. Because if I say what I really think (about the refereeing), I’ll get a lot of games (of suspension),” Ancelotti told Real Madrid TV.

“What I like most is sitting on the Real Madrid bench, so, to avoid suspensions, I decided to not say what I think. So I use irony.

“It was competitive, difficult match. We started well, scoring two goals that were disallowed. In the second half everything evened out, because we lowered our intensity.

“The result isn’t bad, but obviously we always want to win. But a point on a stadium like this and against such a difficult opponent is good. Let’s keep moving.”
