Philadelphia Eagles To Acquire Safety Kevin Byard In A Trade With The Tennessee Titans

According to a person with knowledge of the transaction, the general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles is acquiring outstanding safety Kevin Byard in a trade with the Tennessee Titans, as revealed by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

According to Rapoport, the Eagles will trade Byard to Tennessee for safety Terrell Edmunds, a former first-round choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as fifth- and sixth-round picks in 2024. Later on Monday night, the Titans made the deal official.

For the Eagles, who have struggled defensively this season and needed safety assistance, it’s a coup. With the addition of a past interceptions leader and two-time first-team All-Pro, Philly quickly strengthened a defense that had already shut out the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night.

Although Byard hasn’t played at his best early in the Tennessee season, he is the kind of versatile safety that can round out the Eagles’ secondary. He thanked the Titans organization and the fans in a statement. The native of Philadelphia is a ball-hawk in coverage and excellent against the run. Over the course of eight seasons and 120 games with the Titans, Byard has produced 674 tackles, 63 passes defensed, and 27 interceptions.

According to NFL Research, the 30-year-old safety is one of just two players in the league with more than 600 tackles and 20 INTs since 2017 (Jordan Poyer), and his 27 picks are second most in the league (Xavien Howard). With 59 passes defensed since 2017, Byard has outperformed all other safeties.

Byard will play safety in tandem with Reed Blankenship, who is sidelined, for Middle Tennessee State in Sean Desai’s back end.

Following Chauncey Gardner-Johnson’s departure this summer, the Eagles’ safety group was lacking in playmaking and adaptability. To fill the void, Roseman went out and signed a potentially game-changing player. The transaction occurred after A.J. Brown, a standout receiver, was taken by Philadelphia from Tennessee on draft day in 2022.

Prior to the deadline of October 31, the trade indicates that the 2-4 Titans are sellers. With just six draft selections overall going into the day, Tennessee had only three before the seventh round (first, second, fourth, and three sevenths).

In order to restore the team’s finances, General Manager Ran Carthon may need to ship off further assets throughout the upcoming week.
