Newcastle United Lose Isak, Murphy In Champions League Defeat To Dortmund

Following a 1-0 setback to Borussia Dortmund at a soggy St James’ Park on Wednesday, injuries have added to manager Eddie Howe’s displeasure, making Newcastle United’s first Champions League loss potentially costly.

Despite being in the same position as Dortmund with four points after three games, Newcastle will have to work hard to advance from Group F after their defeat.

However, Howe was even more concerned about the injuries sustained by forwards Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak.

Callum Wilson replaced Sweden’s Isak after just 15 minutes, while Murphy came on as a substitute but lasted just a few minutes before tripping and hurting his shoulder.

Howe warned his team that their schedule could get overwhelming since games are coming up quickly.

“Isak going off was a blow and Jacob came off with what looks like a serious injury,” Howe said. “We’ve got a small squad as is it. That’s probably the most disappointing thing of the night.

“It looks like a recurrence of his [Isak’s] groin problem and it’s a big blow. Jacob looks serious, potentially a dislocation of his shoulder.”

Elliot Anderson, a midfielder, was also absent from the game due to injury, according to Howe.

“He’s got a back problem so I think he’s going to be missing a number of weeks,” he said.

On Saturday, Newcastle travels to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
