New Orleans Pelicans Win Home Opener Against New York Knicks

On Saturday night, the host New Orleans Pelicans upset the New York Knicks 96-87 behind 26 points from Brandon Ingram and 24 from Zion Williamson.

Herbert Jones scored ten points and CJ McCollum added twelve as the Pelicans won their home opener.

The Knicks, who had just defeated Atlanta 126-120, were led by RJ Barrett with 18 points, Jalen Brunson with 14, Julius Randle with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Immanuel Quickley with 10 points off the bench. On one night, the Knicks made only 7 of 37 3-pointers.

New York led 59-43 in rebounding thanks to 15 rebounds from Mitchell Robinson and 10 from Josh Hart. But even after tying the score at 2-2, Pelicans never let up. This wasn’t nearly enough to slow them down.

With 6:55 remaining in the third quarter, Brunson overcame a chilly start to score seven points during a 19-8 rally that put the Knicks within 63-56.

Williamson answered with three straight baskets, but Hart’s 3-pointer later in the half brought New York within six points.

The Pelicans led 77-68 entering the fourth quarter after Ingram scored the last six points for New Orleans in the third.

With a 10-1 run to start the fourth quarter, Jonas Valanciunas scored all eight of his points as New Orleans jumped out to a commanding 87-69 lead.

The opening basket of the game came from Barrett’s layup, but the Pelicans quickly took a 10-point lead with a 14-2 run.

The Knicks closed the gap to six points, but Williamson’s consecutive baskets at the end of the first quarter gave New Orleans a 26-12 edge.

New York shot 6-for-22 from the field in the first quarter and missed all eight of its 3-point attempts.

Early in the second quarter, the Pelicans increased their lead to 19 points thanks to consecutive 3-pointers from Matt Ryan and Jordan Hawkins.

Barrett and the Knicks traded baskets to pull within 15 points, but the Pelicans held their lead at halftime, with McCollum’s three-pointer pushing the score to 55-37 for New Orleans.
