Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh Says Report Of Rescinded Contract Extension Inaccurate

Jim Harbaugh, the coach of Michigan, stated on Monday that it was untrue to say that the school had just withdrawn an offer of a contract extension.

With the Wolverines, Harbaugh is in the second year of a five-year contract. On October 10, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg was informed by Michigan’s athletic director Warde Manuel that the team intended to get the head coach’s contract extended shortly. A week later, according to people familiar with the matter, Michigan found out that the NCAA was looking into a possible years-long cheating plot, and that process was shelved.

On Sunday night, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Michigan had withdrawn its offer to Harbaugh.

“I wouldn’t say that’s accurate, no,” Harbaugh said when asked Monday about the report.

On Saturday, No. 2 Michigan (8-0) hosts Purdue in its first game back after a week off. In the midst of continuous rumors about the NCAA looking into allegations that Michigan staff members paid multiple people to go to future opponents’ games and film the sidelines in an attempt to help decipher the teams’ playcalling signals, Harbaugh stated he is attempting to model a “one-track mind” for his team.

It is not against NCAA guidelines to steal signs. It is against NCAA regulations for any staff member to personally scout an opponent in advance of the regular season.

Shortly after the claims went viral, Harbaugh released a statement in which he denied knowing of the alleged cheating. He stated on Monday that while the NCAA is still conducting its inquiry, he was unable to address the claims in any more detail.

“You just have to let it play out, cooperate with the investigation and watch how it plays out,” Harbaugh said. “The speculation part, as I’ve said I’ve got too much of a one-track mind on coaching the team to engage on every piece of speculation.”

According to Harbaugh, he was unsure of how long the NCAA probe could take to complete. The team, which is on track to make it to the College Football Playoffs for a third straight year, has not yet received an official notice of allegations from the NCAA.

“[There is] stuff we just can’t talk about,” Harbaugh said. “I’d love to. I’m like you. I’m in all your positions, but we’ve got to let it play out.”
