Lupita Nyong’o’s Fans Support Her After Break-Up From Selema Masekela

After Kenyan Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong’o disclosed that she had split from US TV anchor Selema Masekela, her fans came together in support of her.

Nyong’o expressed her desire to communicate “a personal truth” on Instagram after opening up.

“I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception,” she wrote, without naming anyone.

Masekela has disabled his Instagram commenting feature and said nothing.

A-list Hollywood actress Nyong’o, who made history in 2014 by being the first Kenyan and second African to win an Oscar (after South African actress Charlize Theron), revealed her relationship with Masekela to the public in December of last year.

“We just click!” Nyong’o captioned the video introducing their relationship, which she has since deleted.

In a different post, Selema—the son of South African jazz icon Hugh Masekela—also sang poetic over Nyong’o.

“Hearts are synched. My whole and actual love Lupita Nyongo,” he said.

Nyong’o added that her love had been “extinguished by deception” and that she wanted to “publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust” in her breakup post.

Many of the couple’s fans were taken aback to learn of the breakup because they considered the couple’s declaration as a touching moment that transpired years after Masekela had asked his followers for tips on how to approach the Black Panther star in conversation.

“Hypothetically speaking of course, let’s say you are seated behind Lupita Nyong’o on an airplane. What would be your opening line?” Masekela posted on X in 2016.

Thousands of comments have been made in support of Nyong’o by her admirers and some of her famous colleagues. The actress has amassed a sizable fan following over the years because of her riveting roles in blockbuster films like Us and Black Panther.

“We lift you up with love and sisterhood. Your miracles are all around you. Let us count them in confidence and faith,” said Oscar-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay.

Nyong’o has also received a lot of praise from her admirers for her “bravery” and her readiness to publicly discuss a private and delicate matter.

Nyong’o wrote that she was hopeful that “knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it”.

Seldom have there been any remarks endorsing Masekela.
