Kansas City Chiefs Defeat Minnesota Vikings 27-20

Although the Kansas City Chiefs, who are the defending Super Bowl champions, have already seen several close calls, they have only dropped one game, and that was by a single point.

What they might look like once they get into their stride is the terrifying part for the rest of the NFL.

The Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings 27-20 on Sunday after Mahomes fired two touchdown passes in the third quarter, one to All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce after Kelce had left the game due to an ankle injury.

In his most productive game of the year, Mahomes went 31 for 41 for 281 yards and no interceptions for the Chiefs (4-1), who once again prevailed despite playing below their best.

“There’s a lot of young guys out there, and we’re going to keep everybody moving and going in the right direction,” said Mahomes, who completed passes to 10 receivers. “I think by the end of the year we’re going to be dangerous, because you’re not going to know who’s going to get those opportunities throughout the game.”

For the Vikings (1-4), Kirk Cousins fired touchdown passes to Jordan Addison and Alexander Mattison. They had two chances to score the go-ahead touchdown in the final five minutes, but star wide receiver Justin Jefferson’s late hamstring injury and the lack of timeouts caused by previous game management errors proved to be too much to overcome.

While attempting to cut on his route during a third-down throw deep inside Kansas City territory, Jefferson slipped on the ground. He cautiously limped over to the sideline while holding against the back of his right leg. After the game, Jefferson’s coach Kevin O’Connell stated it was too early to give a timetable for his comeback.

On third-and-18 from his own 17, Mahomes connected with Justin Watson for a 33-yard gain to extend the Chiefs’ opening possession of the second half. The two-time MVP ended that drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Rashee Rice to break the tie.

Taylor Swift, who is said to be dating Kelce, missed the game after attending the Chiefs’ previous two contests. Kelce stumbled awkwardly to the ground after collecting a pass in the second quarter and needed X-rays. He returned for the following possession after watching the previous one from the sidelines during the first half.

The defense was the driving force behind the Chiefs’ victory thanks to Steve Spagnuolo’s plenty of extra rushers that were directed at Cousins. Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed led the secondary defense in holding Jefferson to three catches and 28 yards, both season lows.

After a record 11 victories in 11 games decided by one score in 2022, Minnesota has lost all four of its games this year by eight points or less. Josh Oliver’s turnover, which the Chiefs recovered at the Minnesota 45, cost the Vikings a fumble on their opening drive. The drive was finished with Isaiah Pacheco’s touchdown run, which gave Kansas City the early advantage.

Twelve turnovers, including eight lost fumbles, are an NFL record for the Vikings.

“We need to protect the football, and we need to make plays when they are there,” said Cousins, who went 29 for 47 for 284 yards and no turnovers.
