Kane Helps Bayern Munich To Champions League Victory At Galatasaray

Bayern Munich scored twice to secure a 3-1 victory on Tuesday that maintained them atop their Champions League Group A after putting Galatasaray under severe strain for more than 70 minutes.

Bayern’s record win run in the Champions League group stage was increased to 16 games with the victory. In the group stage, the German champions had also gone an unprecedented 37 games without losing.

With nine points, the Bavarians lead their group; Galatasaray is in second place with four.

After goals in the first half hour, Bayern found themselves, surprisingly, on the back foot as Galatasaray scored 20 goals to their six. The score was tied at 1-1.

But, the 73rd-minute goal by Harry Kane of Bayern and the subsequent six-minute goal by Jamal Musiala of the same team ended their opponents’ 23-match winning streak in all competitions.

“It’s my first time in this stadium and I’m just about getting my hearing back now,” Kane said. “Thankfully, we were able to come through it today.

“It’s a really important win. This is a really tough place to come. It made things difficult for us, especially in the first half.

“In the second half we were a bit more calm, better on the ball and took our chances. To have nine points after three games is really important.”

Full of confidence after their victory against Manchester United the previous matchday, the Turks showed no symptoms of jitters in the face of their more famous rivals and had a chance with Mauro Icardi after four minutes.

Kingsley Coman fired in a goal in the eighth minute to give the visitors the lead and quiet the ferocious home fans. Just one minute later, though, goalie Sven Ulreich had to save the day by magnificently palming a Kerem Akt├╝rkoglu shot wide.

Subsequently, in a hectic first half, Ulreich cleared a cutback into Akturkoglu’s path, but the 25-year-old missed the goal with the keeper beaten.

But in the 30th, when Icardi was taken down in the box, the hosts’ persistence paid off. Ulreich dove to the side as the Argentine calmly chipped his penalty, a la Panenka, into the center of the net.

Galatasaray again had the majority of the chances in an equally fast-paced first half, with Bayern defending valiantly.

But after failing to score once again, the hosts began to lose speed, and Bayern gained momentum. Kane attempted a backheel flick before scoring on the rebound in the 73rd minute.

With other players out due to injury, Bayern’s goal opened the score and they added another through Musiala to complete their well-deserved victory.

Later on in the group, Manchester United takes on FC Copenhagen.
