Kamaru Usman Loses To Khamzat Chimaev, Believes Hand Broken

Khamzat Chimaev, the middleweight fighter for the UFC, defeated Kamaru Usman by majority decision at UFC 294 on Saturday inside Etihad Arena. However, it appears that Chimaev may have fractured his right hand during the fight.

Chimaev (13-0) told ESPN that he thinks his first-round dominance over Usman fractured his right hand. Except for a little back-and-forth at the end of the fight, he seemed less aggressive in the second and third rounds.

“First round, I think I broke my hand and finger,” Chimaev said. “I couldn’t punch hard with right hand. My right hand is a big weapon. When you can’t use it, it’s hard to work.”

The bout was won by Chimaev by scores of 29–27, 29–27, and 28–28. All three judges scored the second round as a victory for Usman. By the scorecard of one judge, he had won the third round.

Born in Chechnya, Chimaev fights out of Dubai and promised to have the hand examined soon. According to UFC president Dana White, he will next take on middleweight champion Sean Strickland after his victory on Saturday.

“I will check my hand,” Chimaev said. “If it’s good, I’m gonna try to lift the weights and be ready for the next one.”
