John Stamos Claims He’s ‘Afraid’ To Think Of How Bob Saget Would React To New Memoir

John Stamos would never have believed you if you had told him that his made-for-TV life story would be published as a book.

The actor, who was born in Southern California and made a career out of a recurring soap opera role, embarks on a modest trip down memory lane with his debut novel, “If You Would Have Told Me” (Henry Holt & Co., 334 pp., out now).

With “General Hospital,” Stamos rose to adolescent idol status. Later, with the cherished family comedy “Full House,” he became a sitcom star. Notwithstanding these career highs, Stamos has experienced heartache throughout the years, including a well-publicized divorce from actress Rebecca Romijn and a public battle with alcoholism.

“For as many high points as I’ve had in my life, I’ve had a lot of low points, and those are the moments that people can relate to me,” Stamos tells USA TODAY. “It’s a deep dive into a life that I thought wasn’t worthy of a book, but as I wrote it, I realized maybe it is and maybe people will learn a little bit from my experience.”

From 1987 to 1995, Stamos portrayed Jesse Katsopolis, America’s favorite uncle, in the television series “Full House.” According to Stamos, writing about the sitcom’s nearly ten-year existence was the most challenging aspect of the book, but it was crucial to recognize the show’s significance.

“It changed all of our lives, and I’ve spent so many years trying to put it behind me, I wanted to show that I can’t get away from it,” Stamos says. “Why not be proud of something that people really love and that was good and wholesome?”

Stamos also talks about his creative disagreements with co-star Bob Saget, who portrayed Danny Tanner, the patriarch of the family. At one point, Stamos calls Saget the “humblest egomaniac I’ve ever met.”

When Saget’s sisters and Stamos’s sister both fell very ill at the same time, Stamos claims that his connection with Saget changed.

“I think if (Bob) was alive, I’d be really afraid of him reading the first part of it ‘cause I really highlighted the issues that I had with him,” Stamos says. “But then it comes around when all three of our sisters got sick, and Dave and Bob lost their sisters, and that was the key to Bob and I really connecting.”
