Iowa’s Members Of House Vote For Mike Johnson As Speaker

Following weeks of unrest, Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was chosen speaker of the House with a sufficient number of votes. Following Kevin McCarthy’s ouster, three other GOP hopefuls were unable to win the speakership.

More than three weeks after hardliners toppled outgoing Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the chamber’s narrow GOP majority came together behind a leader when Iowa’s four Republican congressional representatives voted on Wednesday to install Mike Johnson as speaker of the House.

With a vote of 220–209, Louisiana native Johnson, 51, was formally elected speaker. All Republicans in attendance supported him, and all Democrats supported New York Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

In the three weeks since McCarthy was removed from office on October 3, Johnson was the fourth speaker nominee selected by House Republicans. Prior to a vote by the entire chamber, the caucus selected U.S. Reps. Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan, and Tom Emmer as their candidates for speaker. However, Scalise and Emmer withdrew, while Jordan made three unsuccessful efforts before declaring his candidacy.

In the initial voting round, all four of Iowa’s congressional representatives backed Jordan; however, U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks withdrew her endorsement and cast votes for other candidates in the next rounds.

Miller-Meeks stated that she had submitted “credible death threats” to the police following her vote against Jordan, and she concluded by saying, “I will not bend to bullies.”

In the event that Congress cannot agree on a spending plan, the federal government may shut down in a few weeks. Conservative hardliners moved to remove McCarthy because they were upset over a short-term agreement that retained government funding at the same levels for forty-five days.

Additionally, President Joe Biden has requested that Congress approve a $106 billion plan that would finance Israel, the Indo-Pacific region, the Ukraine, and U.S. border protection.

Spokesman for the Democratic National Committee Sarafina Chitika criticized Johnson’s record in a statement.

“MAGA Republicans’ new speaker-designate supports extreme nationwide abortion bans,” Chitika said. “He led the charge for Donald Trump denying President Biden’s legitimate election win and tried to overthrow the votes of 81 million Americans. He’s a leading proponent of slashing Social Security and Medicare. Mike Johnson is a carbon copy of the MAGA extremism that is deeply unpopular with Americans across the country.”
