Hornets Kai Jones Requests Trade On Social Media While Away From Team, Could Be Subject To Penalty

Charlotte Hornets big player Kai Jones, who is temporarily away from the organizations in his most recent social media incident of the summer, posted a public request for a trade on Monday afternoon. “I have formally asked the Charlotte Hornets to trade me. “#GOATLIFE,” wrote Jones.

In case Jones later deletes the comment, here is a screenshot.

On September 30, the Hornets declared that Jones would not report to training camp for “personal reasons” and would not rejoin the club going forward. On September 26, Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer said that the team “seem concerned” about Jones, who had recently demonstrated odd conduct on social media.

Jones has, among other things, criticized teammates, including as fellow big men Mark Williams and Nick Richards, and asserted his superiority over LaMelo Ball and the No. 2 overall choice Brandon Miller.

The Hornets reportedly declined to respond when the Observer contacted them on Monday.

Jones could be subject to a fine or suspension for publicly requesting a trade, based on the current collective bargaining agreement, which states, “Any player (or, for clarity, any player representative or person acting with authority on behalf of a player) who publicly expresses a desire to be traded to another Team shall be subject to a fine and/or a suspension. The maximum fine that may be imposed by the NBA on a player pursuant to the foregoing shall be $150,000.”

Jones, the 19th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, played in 46 games for the Hornets past season, averaging 3.4 points and 2.7 rebounds.
