Haaland Scores Two As Manchester City Defeat Young Boys

Manchester City overcame Young Boys 3-1 in Switzerland to keep their perfect record in Group G of the 2023–24 Champions League with goals from Manuel Akanji and Erling Haaland in the second half.

In the 48th minute, Jack Grealish sent Rodri the ball inside the box, setting up the first goal. Ruben Dias won the header after the Spaniard flicked the ball up toward the six-yard line, but it thundered off the bar. The ball was originally bundled into the empty goal in front of Akanji by reflex.

However, the lead would not even last five minutes as Meschack Elia’s diagonal run from the left flank was followed by a release from Chiekh Niasse, putting the latter ahead. Ederson leveled the score after he effortlessly lifted the ball over the Brazilian.

Encouraged by the boisterous Swiss audience, Young Boys gathered confidence, but it would only take the reigning champions 13 minutes to seize back control of the game after Mohamed Camara fouled Rodri in the area following deft work by Grealish. After the on-field call was affirmed by VAR, Haaland scored his first Champions League goal of the year by putting his penalty kick in the right center of the goal.

Subsequently, the Norwegian completed the victory after Rodri made a deft pass into his area. Assessing the situation before him, he switched from his preferred left foot to his right, curving a shot high into the upper corner, leaving Anthony Racioppi with no choice but to watch the ball—and the game—go past him.
