Georgia tight end Brock Bowers exited the No. 1 Bulldogs’ 37-20 victory over Vanderbilt in the first half on Saturday with an ankle strain. He did not come back.
Afterward, according to coach Kirby Smart, X-rays were negative. When Bowers got back to Athens, he was supposed to get an MRI.
“It’s an ankle sprain, don’t know how severe,” Smart said. “X-rays were negative. Until we get an MRI we won’t know anything more.”
With 7:24 remaining in the second quarter, Bowers, the fourth-ranked talent on ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.’s most recent Big Board, suffered an injury. He knelt on the ground and punched the surface.
Trainers assisted Bowers, a junior from Napa, California, in leaving the field. He was brought to the sideline medical tent and then assisted to the locker room for X-rays.
Before leaving, Bowers had 4 catches for 22 yards.
Bowers led the Bulldogs going into the game on Saturday with 37 receptions for 545 yards and four touchdowns. In each of the previous three games, he had more than 100 receiving yards.
