Former NFL Player Sergio Brown, Charged With Killing Mother, Denied Pretrial Release

A prosecutor stated on Wednesday that former NFL player Sergio Brown, who is accused of killing his mother, purchased a one-way ticket to Cancun, Mexico, after being the last person seen with the victim prior to her murder last month.

Cook County Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez denied Brown’s pretrial release during his detention hearing on Wednesday. Brown is accused of first-degree murder and concealing a homicide. He will be held in custody until his upcoming court appearance on November 22.

On September 16, his mother Myrtle Brown’s body was found in Maywood, close to a creek, some 12 miles (19 kilometers) west of Chicago. Her death was declared a homicide by a medical examiner, who also concluded that she had been assaulted.

Brown, 35, shared a Maywood home with his mother, 73.

According to local news sources, Brown was returned to Illinois on Tuesday after being deported to the United States from Mexico on October 7.

Brown appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times during the hearing wearing red basketball shorts and a gray hoodie, his wrists restrained by handcuffs. Except when the judge spoke to him, he remained silent and showed no signs of emotion.

Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Jose Villarreal said in court that Brown was the last person to be seen with his mother on the night of her passing, on September 14, and that he was seen burning cloth. The following morning, Brown took a plane to Cancun, and according to expenditures on his credit card, he may have rented two houses in Colombia prior to his deportation, Villarreal said.

According to Villarreal, Brown’s mother’s cellphone revealed that they were in the vicinity of the scene when she passed away.

Robert Fox, the public defender, disputed the prosecutor’s claim that DNA samples from under Myrtle Brown’s fingernails and a toothbrush in Sergio Brown’s bedroom showed similarities, arguing that no one saw the murder.

“There’s no direct evidence, it’s all circumstantial,” Fox said in court.

Fox’s associate public defender, Charnelle Dunlap, stated that her office was “not in a position to comment on the case at this time.”

At the University of Notre Dame, Brown played collegiate football while attending Proviso East High School in Maywood. The New England Patriots signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2010. Through 2016, he also participated in NFL games for the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Indianapolis Colts.
