Fifteen Detained As Field Sit-In Delays Start Of Cal-USC Game

Following their storming of the field and staging of a sit-in that delayed the opening of Saturday’s game between Cal and No. 24 USC at Memorial Stadium, fifteen people—mostly students from California—were brought into custody and placed in handcuffs.

The Cal police department issued a statement claiming that the demonstrators were against a professor’s suspension. Many of the demonstrators wore T-shirts with the slogan “Justice for Ivonne,” and they were seated back to back in the center of the Cal logo.

The institution recently suspended Ivonne del Valle, a professor of Spanish and Portuguese, for reportedly following and harassing a professor at another university.

Players from both teams stood and watched as police and security personnel walked up to the gathering. After that, the fans were led away while wearing handcuffs. Thirteen of the fifteen protestors were Cal students, according to the police statement.
