Dolly Parton Says Her Grandfather Physically Punished Her For Wearing Daring Clothes When She Was Young

Dolly Parton is thinking back on her well-known style and the challenges she overcame to uphold it.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the renowned artist discussed her upcoming album “Rockstar” and the fashion-focused book “Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones.”

When talking about the latter, she revealed some details about her distinctive look, which she claimed was influenced by the “town tramp” in her hometown.

Even though Parton claims that her interpretation of the local woman’s fashion “came from a very serious place,” the people in her life weren’t always in favor of it.

She claimed to The Guardian that her preacher grandfather, who was also a sharecropper, physically chastised her for the way she wore because he detested the way she looked.

“I was willing to pay for it,” Parton told the publication about her style. “I’m very sensitive, I didn’t like being disciplined – it hurt my feelings so bad to be scolded or whipped or whatever. But sometimes there’s just that part of you that’s willing, if you want something bad enough, to go for it.”

Her critics weren’t limited to just her family, either. Record-label executives frequently advised Parton to loosen up her manner early in her career, but the singer never did as she revealed to The Guardian.

“I’ve always been true to myself,” she said. “That was what my mama always used to say, ‘To thine own self be true.’ I put a lot of stock in that. Everything I do, whether it’s my personality, how I conduct myself and business, or whatever, if I do it my way, according to what I understand and believe, there’s a strength in that. You can think, ‘I can stand by this, I can live by this.”

Parton made light of her outfit while still acknowledging the difficult times. She mentioned that in addition to all of the famous dresses she has worn, there have been some failures.

Even while Parton now laments some of her earlier looks, she was at ease with her hair and attire when she wore them, the singer recently admitted to Insider.
