De’Von Achane And Tyreek Hill Help Miami Dolphins To Defeat New York Giants 31-16

Every time De’Von Achane touches the ball as a rookie, his teammates are learning to anticipate a huge play.

A 76-yard rushing score by Achane on Sunday helped the Miami Dolphins defeat the New York Giants 31-16.

He gained 151 yards on 11 attempts at an average of 13.7 yards, making him the first Dolphins player since Jay Ajayi in 2016 to have three straight games with at least 100 yards rushing.

“It’s very promising to know that he knows where he’s going to line up,” said quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, “and then basically if he’s getting the ball, you know it’s going to be a big play more often than not.”

The Dolphins’ 524 yards gave them 2,568 overall, setting an NFL record for most yards in a season’s first five games.

After the Buffalo Bills (3-2) fell to Jacksonville in London earlier on Sunday, Miami (4-1) took over the top spot in the AFC East with the victory.

Having completed 22 of 30 throws for 308 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, Tagovailoa.

One of the interceptions was returned 102 yards by Jason Pinnock of the Giants for New York’s lone touchdown. This season, it was the Giants’ first score in the opening period of a game. The Giants’ 102-yard interception return was a team record.

After being sacked by defender Andrew Van Ginkel, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones departed the game in the fourth quarter with a neck injury. With 12:11 remaining, Jones was replaced by Tyrod Taylor, who then guided the Giants on a touchdown drive that ended with a Graham Gano 51-yard field goal.

Jones underwent imaging testing on Monday to assess the severity of the neck problem after taking X-rays following the game.

“We’ve got to figure out a way to protect him better,” Giants coach Brian Daboll said.

Achane became the only player in the Super Bowl era to have seven touchdowns in his first four NFL games with his 76-yard score in the second quarter, which gave Miami a 17-10 lead at the half. He scored two touchdowns last Sunday against Buffalo and four against Denver in Week 3.

According to NFL NextGen Stats, Achane’s touchdown run clocked in at 21.76 mph.

On Miami’s subsequent 64-yard drive, Tyreek Hill received a pass from Tagovailoa. The fastest ball-carrier speed in the NFL this season was reached by Hill on that play, who reached a high speed of 22.01 mph.

The seven NFL teams with the fastest speeds are all Dolphins. Hill owns three and Achane has three. The other belongs to Raheem Mostert, who scored on a 2-yard run on Sunday.

For the thirteenth time in his career, Hill exceeded 150 receiving yards by catching eight passes for a total of 181 yards. Along with Lance Alworth (17) and Jerry Rice (16), he shared third place with Calvin Johnson for the most such games in a player’s first eight seasons in the NFL.

On Miami’s first drive of the third quarter, Hill also caught a touchdown pass for 69 yards, giving the Dolphins a 24-10 lead. After the play, when he jumped into the stands to give his mother the ball, he was penalized for taunting.

The Dolphins’ average play length was 9.7 yards, and their pass rush improved after failing to affect Josh Allen the previous week. Miami recorded seven sacks and 14 quarterback hits. Despite self-inflicted injuries that prevented them from further separating themselves from the Giants, those plays kept the Dolphins in the lead.

When safety Xavier McKinney caused an Achane fumble in the second quarter, the Giants (1-4) forced a turnover for the first time this season, which edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux recovered.

The Giants occasionally moved the ball (268 yards), and forced three turnovers, but they only managed to score nine offensive points as a result.

Gano made a 48-yard field goal after missing a 55-yard try in the first for New York’s lone offensive score of the first half.

On Miami’s first drive, Jaylen Waddle grabbed Tagovailoa’s first touchdown pass for his first score of the year.
