Connor Bedard Scores First NHL Goal In Chicago Blackhawks’ Defeat To Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins‘ 100th season began on Wednesday, and while Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, and other hockey legends were present to celebrate, Chicago Blackhawks prospect Connor Bedard took another early step toward joining them on Wednesday night by scoring his first NHL goal.

“It’s a big relief,” said Bedard, who posed with the puck in the locker room after the 3-1 loss to Boston. “You want to get one really bad, quick, and kind of get that out of the way. But it was really cool moment and cool building to do it in.”

For Boston, who won its first game of the season after setting NHL records for wins and points before losing in the first round of the playoffs, David Pastrnak scored to break a tie in the second period and added an empty-netter.

The milestone for Bedard, the league’s most anticipated rookie in almost a decade, was ruined by the Bruins’ victory.

The Blackhawks got a scare when the No. 1 overall draft pick smashed into the board’s skate first late in the third period and took a while to get up. He also committed his first penalty.

He continued playing and declared himself “great” afterward.

For the Blackhawks, who defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in their season opener on Tuesday, Arvid Soderblom stopped 32 shots. Bedard had an assist for his first NHL point. In Boston, Bedard outdid himself by making it 1-0 with a wraparound goal that beat Ullmark.

Bedard’s goal made him the fourth No. 1 choice overall and the first since Nathan MacKinnon in 2013–14 to score in both of his first two professional contests.

“I remember, like, being behind the net and kind of seeing it, and I was just like, ‘Don’t screw this up,'” Bedard said. “And then once it went in, just a lot of joy, for sure.”
