Barca Teenager Marc Guiu Scores On Dream Debut To Defeat Bilbao

Barcelona defeated Athletic Bilbao 1-0 at home behind a goal from teenage replacement Marc Guiu late in the second half in his debut in La Liga. This victory moved Xavi Hernandez’s team up to third place, one point behind Real Madrid, ahead of next week’s Clasico.

In just his second touch of the ball, the 17-year-old Barca youth product beat goalkeeper Unai Simon with a low shot to score his first league goal faster than any player in the club’s history. He did so by latching onto a pass on the edge of the box.

Barca closed on Real Madrid, who were restricted to a 1-1 draw against Sevilla on Saturday, by moving up one spot to 24 points.

“We knew they (Bilbao) were going to put constant pressure on us,” said Xavi. “They have done an extraordinary job. It has been difficult for us (but) if anyone deserved the victory, it was Barcelona.”

In the first half, Barca had more possession but had less chances than the visitors, with Joao Felix missing the crossbar after ten minutes as their finest chance. Barca was missing the injured Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, and Robert Lewandowski.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen denied Nico Williams in first-half stoppage time, but Bilbao still had a chance when Inaki Williams’ shot was stopped.

Yuri Berchiche, the left back for the visitors, appeared to have injured his ankle halfway through the first half.

After the break, Barca’s attack became more focused, but Spain’s Simon, the goalkeeper, denied Felix twice and held firm until Guiu, the striker, replaced Fermin Lopez in the 80th minute and scored.

Guiu became the youngest player to score for Barcelona in his La Liga debut this century at the age of 17 years and 291 days.

“I can’t believe it. I’m out of breath, enjoying the moment,” he told Esports 3.

“This is unimaginable. I’ve been working all my life to take advantage of opportunities and it’s come to me.

“Joao Felix controlled the ball, I saw that there was space behind the defence, he gave it to me and I beat Unai Simon. It’s an honour to have scored a goal against a goalkeeper of his calibre”.

In the Champions League, Barcelona takes on Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday. The following Saturday, they play Real Madrid.
