Aston Villa Thumps West Ham In 5-Goal Thriller, Now 5th In PL

Aston Villa destroyed West Ham to go to the 5th position in the Premier League table, after coming back from the international break.

Villa’s Douglas Luiz was on fire as he scored two goals. Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey also got their names on the scoresheet.

Unai Emery’s men took the lead when Douglas fired in a low ball which Hammers goalkeeper Alphonse Areola could not keep at bay in the first half.

Early in the second half, Douglas Luiz scored his 2nd and made it two for his team.

West Ham tried to push back into the game when Jarrod Bowen’s deflected strike found the corner of the net.

Jarrod Bowen became the third player in Premier League history to score in each of his team’s first five away games in a campaign, after Thierry Henry and Mohamed Salah.

The game began with a moment of silence for the victims of the Israel-Hamas war and then an applause for the celebration of life for Sir Bobby Charlton who passed away on Saturday.

Late in the second half, a Mohammed Kudus mistake gave Watkins a fine opportunity and he surely sent the ball into the back of the net.

Aston Villa have won 11 consecutive home league matches for the first time since a run of 13 ending in October 1983.

Speaking about the match, Unai Emery said:

“You have to connect with the fans. You have to be focused and strong in our structure defensively and offensively but overall we have to create a big atmosphere here with the crowd and feel they are playing with us.

“We are not contenders to be in the top four. We are not contenders to be in the top seven teams at the beginning but of course, we have our dreams and one of our dreams is to be with the top seven teams and try to do something this year in Europe.”

Aston Villa travel to AZ on Thursday in the Europa Conference League; kick-off at 5.45 pm. West Ham is also on the road on Thursday when they travel to Greece to face Olympiakos; kick-off is also at 5.45 pm.
