Team World Wins First 3 Matches Against Team Europe At Laver Cup

Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-3 as Team World won the first three singles matches of the Laver Cup international competition on Friday.

Team World also received victories from Ben Shelton, Francisco Cerundolo, and others along with Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe’s doubles team.

During their encounter, Monfils made two visits to Auger-Aliassime’s side of the court to verbally duel with him, but the Canadian disregarded both of his advances.

Monfils frequently played to the fans at Rogers Arena, cupping his ear to hear applause or sitting on advertising boardings along the border of the black court and shrugging to the crowd when a call didn’t go his way.

The French player was heard saying to Team Europe captain Bjorn Borg over the microphone that he “was here to have fun” and that he had been annoyed by the referee’s calls during the game.

The Canadian stated he was taking the match seriously, minimized his opponent’s mind games, and added that he was concentrated on playing by the tournament’s rules.

Auger-Aliassime and Monfils faced off again after their previous encounter at the Laver Cup three years prior.

Throughout the entire game, Monfils made Auger-Aliassime struggle for everything. He volleyed across the court numerous times in an effort to put Auger-Aliassime on the defensive. However, the native of Montreal excelled at serving, winning 85% of his first serves and 64% of his second serves. He supplemented that with an outstanding net performance, scoring 15 net points to Monfils’ five.

The victory over Arthur Fils by Shelton, 7-6 (4), 6-1, gave Team World an early advantage over Team Europe. Cerundolo added to it by defeating Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina 6-3, 7-5.

Shelton had the only two breaks of the match, both coming in the second set, and earned 85% of first-serve points.

In his encounter against Davidovich-Fokina, Cerundolo served four aces and flourished, although he continually battled to defeat his European opponent.

With Shelton’s victory, Team World won the Laver Cup’s inaugural game for the first time ever.
