Sunderland Whoops In-Form Southampton 5-0

Sunderland stunned in-formed Southampton who were just relegated from the Premier League in their fifth match of the season.

Southampton has won three and drawn one of their last four matches, but they were left trailing a good distance as they traveled to Sunderland.

Jack Clarke put the hosts in front, after he stooped to head the home side in front in the first minute from a beautiful curling cross by Trai Hume.

Six minutes later, Pierre Ekwah took a pass on the edge of the box, was not closed down, and drilled a low shot which was deflected beyond a sprawling Gavin Bazunu by Flynn Downes giving the host more advantage.

Ekwah scored the Black Cats’ third just before half-time, cutting out a Mason Holgate pass and curling a shot beyond Bazunu at his near post.

Southampton could not get a consolation as Bradley Dack tucked in Abdoullah Ba’s cross from close range just after the break.

Chris Rigg finished the deal, making Southampton supporters leave before time.

Southampton only troubled goalkeeper Anthony Patterson on limited occasions, with Holgate and Sekou Mara heading wide with two of their best opportunities.
