Real Madrid Reclaim Top Spot After Defeating Girona

Thanks to goals from Joselu, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid defeated Girona 3-0 on Saturday to reclaim first place in the LaLiga rankings.

Real now has 21 points after eight games, one more than Barcelona, who on Friday defeated Sevilla 1-0 at home. Girona fell to third place.

In the first five minutes, Girona had a good chance to score twice. Yangel Herrera headed an effort over the bar from close range, then Viktor Tsyhankov headed a shot against the post.

After surviving the hosts’ early dominance, Joselu’s straightforward goal in the 17th minute gave Real the lead after Bellingham’s lovely outside-foot cross.

Four minutes later, Tchouameni doubled Real’s advantage by deftly eluding his defender and rising to his highest point to head Toni Kroos’ corner into the goal.

Bellingham should have scored in the 28th minute after racing through on goal, but Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga did an outstanding job of stopping his weak attempt.

Just before halftime, Kroos put Gazzaniga to the test by unleashing a magnificent volley that the Argentinean pushed over the bar.

After the break, Girona didn’t give up and kept trying to score. Aleix Garcia crossed for Herrera, whose downward header bounced up and past the crossbar.

When Joselu’s looping pass found Bellingham in the 71st minute, he skillfully guided home a volley to score his sixth goal in all competitions for Real and seal the victory.

Real will also take heart from Vinicius Jr.’s performance, who showed promise in his first start since recovering from a thigh muscle injury before being substituted in the 68th minute.

However, Carlo Ancelotti’s team was dealt a blow when Nacho lost control and jumped in with a hard tackle on Portu in stoppage time. The tackle was initially given a yellow card but was changed to a red card after a VAR review.

Next Saturday, Girona will play at home against Cadiz, while Real will go to Italy on Tuesday to play Serie A champions Napoli in the Champions League.
