In order to get to the U.S. Open quarterfinals on Sunday night, Novak Djokovic defeated qualifier Borna Gojo 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 without having to deal with any of the difficulties he did in his previous match.

Djokovic—who has three of his men’s record 23 Grand Slam victories at Flushing Meadows—had to overturn a two-set deficit, in order to defeat Laslo Djere in the third round.

This time, Djokovic played much more neatly and maintained complete control. While Gojo committed 40 unforced errors, he finished with just 12.

“Just glad to get through in straight sets,” remarked the second-seeded Djokovic, who already has it locked up that Carlos Alcaraz will be replaced at the top of the ATP rankings next week.

Djokovic defeated Gojo five times in his 15 serve games, while only being broken once himself.

The No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz, a 25-year-old from California who is the only player left in the men’s tournament who hasn’t already lost a set, will be the opponent for Djokovic next.

Djokovic has a 7-0 career record versus Fritz in head-to-head competition.

“I’m not going to talk about what he needs to do to have a chance against me. I’m sure he’s going to try to figure that out with his coach,” Djokovic said. “I’m going to get ready, obviously, for that match as any other match, doing my analytics, watching the last match we had against each other.”

Tuesday’s showdown will be Fritz’s first quarterfinal and Djokovic’s thirteenth at New York.

“I need to play within myself and trust that if I’m playing well, then that’s going to be enough, and I don’t need to kind of do anything extra,” said Fritz, who defeated Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4 earlier Sunday.

Along with No. 10 Frances Tiafoe and unseeded Ben Shelton, Fritz is one of three American men who prevailed in fourth-round matches.

Since Andre Agassi, James Blake, and Robby Ginepri did it in 2005, a trio of American males hasn’t advanced to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows.

In the semifinals, the victor of Djokovic vs. Fritz will play the victor of Tiafoe vs. Shelton.
