Los Angeles Rams Defeat Seahawks 30-13 In Season Opener

los-angeles-rams

With a newly assembled and unproven offensive line, and the external narrative that the Los Angeles Rams‘ ceiling this season is simply being competitive, Matthew Stafford opened the season without his favorite target.

The Rams demonstrated that they were much more than merely competitive by outplaying and occasionally overpowering the Seattle Seahawks to start the season.

The Rams shocked the Seahawks 30-13 on Sunday thanks to Stafford’s 334 passing yards, three touchdown runs by Kyren Williams and Cam Akers, and Stafford’s 334 passing yards even with Cooper Kupp out.

In order to achieve his 58th career 300-yard throwing game during the regular season, Stafford was superb in ripping apart Seattle’s secondary. He did this despite Kupp missing the first four games of the season due to a hamstring injury and being placed on injured reserve.

Stafford discovered some more targets.

Puka Nacua, a rookie, caught 10 passes for 119 yards while being targeted 15 times. Tutu Atwell caught six passes for a career-high 119 yards in his first game. Additionally, the Rams excelled on third downs, when they converted 11 of their 17 opportunities, resulting in lengthy drives and a significant edge in time of possession.

Los Angeles had 426 total yards, 27 first downs, and 39:23 of possession time.

Williams scored on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the game, then on the first possession of the second half, he scored from 7 yards out to give Los Angeles a 14-13 lead.

Stafford, the Rams’ coaching staff, and the rest of the team wanted to remain competitive even after the squad had been mostly decimated during the offseason due to salary cap difficulties. Los Angeles was then forced to surround the few surviving stars on the team with a number of inexperienced guys.

The Rams showed they can be more than just what many may expect in their season opener.

Seattle suffered its biggest home defeat at the hands of the Rams since Los Angeles defeated the Seahawks 42-7 in the 2017 campaign. The Rams have won nine of the previous 13 games played versus Seattle, including their victory in 2017.

Meanwhile, Seattle struggled when expectations were high that it could catch up to San Francisco in the NFC West. But many of the concerns that surfaced during the Seahawks’ struggles in the previous season were still present.

Seattle couldn’t leave the field on third down. It was unable to sustain its own drives, going 2 of 9 on third downs, and in the first half, when touchdowns were required, it was forced to settle for field goal tries. In the final minutes, Quandre Diggs was called for unnecessary roughness for a foul away from the play, and DK Metcalf was flagged for taunting, highlighting the unhappiness with the performance.

Seattle’s offense managed just 12 yards and one first down In the second half.

Geno Smith started only 16 of 26 passes for only 112 yards in his second season as a starter. In the first half, he threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Metcalf, but Seattle only had one offensive play that covered more than 15 yards.
