Hurricane Lee’s Uncertain Track Has Meteorologists Watching Closely

Hurricane Lee grew into a Category 2 hurricane on Thursday morning. It is forecasted to build even more into a Category 5 storm in the coming days before making a perilous and unclear turn to the north that most of the East Coast will have to closely monitor.

The Category 1 hurricane, which had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph early on Thursday, could strengthen to nearly Category 5 strength, as it reaches the eastern Caribbean.

The hurricane’s anticipated route will take it across some of the Atlantic Ocean’s warmest waters and relatively calm upper-level winds, which are ideal circumstances for a hurricane to intensify even more quickly.

Lee’s winds are predicted to reach a maximum of 160 mph or Category 5-strength. Early next week, Lee is still predicted to be a severe hurricane over the southwestern Atlantic as it hits the eastern Caribbean on Friday night.

The likelihood that the center of Lee will pass to the north of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Leeward Islands this weekend and early next week is growing. Some of these islands may experience tropical storm conditions, dangerous surf, and rip currents this weekend.

The Lee hurricane is forecast to turn to the north early next week, according to computer model trends. However, the precise timing of that turn and how far west Lee will be able to track by that point will greatly influence how near it comes to the US.

Here is how the storm will develop and two possible outcomes that meteorologists are keeping an eye on in case the US threat materializes.
