Detroit Lions Defeated Reigning Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs 21-20

The Detroit Lions shocked the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs 21-20 on Thursday night at the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium to start the National Football League’s 2023 regular season.

Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown scored the league’s first touchdown on a 9-yard pass from quarterback Jared Goff, late in the first quarter.

The Chiefs, led by two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes, came roaring back, scoring two touchdowns in a row to lead 14-7 at the break.

Rookie Lions safety Brian Branch intercepted Mahomes and returned it for a score to tie the game, early in the third quarter.

Harrison Butker, the kicker for the Chiefs, made two field goals to put Kansas City ahead 20-14 before Lions running back David Montgomery scored the game-winning touchdown with just over seven minutes remaining in the contest.

Mahomes finished with 226 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception while playing without star tight end Travis Kelce, who was unable to play due to a hyperextended knee sustained during practice earlier this week. Goff gained 253 yards in total and scored a touchdown.

It was a noteworthy victory for the Lions, who had not previously seen success in a playoff game since the 1991 campaign. Under third-year head coach Dan Campbell, who last year led the team to a winning season – 9-8 – in which Detroit won eight of its final 10 games, the Lions will hope they are turning the corner.

Things weren’t entirely horrible for the Chiefs. The Chiefs supporters applauded the club when it unveiled its most recent Super Bowl title banner prior to kickoff on Thursday.
