Christian Wood To Join Lakers On 2-Year Deal

According to numerous rumors, Los Angeles Lakers big man Christian Wood and the team have reached an agreement on a two-year contract.

A player option for the second season of the contract may allow Wood to test the market again after failing to sign a significant free agent contract this summer.

Wood wrote on Twitter shortly after the Lakers’ contract was announced: “It’s always been my dream to be a laker.”

Wood was born in Long Beach, attended high school in Los Alamitos, and will turn 28 shortly before the start of the season. He then left the city to enroll in two prep schools before beginning his career at UNLV.

Wood just finished a season in which he played in 67 games for the Mavericks and averaged 16.6 points and 7.3 rebounds. The 6-foot-10 center/forward shot 36.7% of his 3-point attempts last season while shooting 51.5% overall.

Over the course of his seven-year career, Wood has played for eight different clubs while averaging 14.8 points and 7.3 rebounds.

He established himself as a dependable offensive player in the NBA despite bouncing back and forth from the NBA G League earlier in his career by putting up a career-best 21.0 points per game for Houston in 2020–21. Although Wood can play as a small-ball center and can open up defenses with his 3-point shot, he occasionally finds it difficult to match up defensively.

Following their remarkable run to the Western Conference Finals, led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers added Wood as their fifth veteran this summer. While keeping free agents D’Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves, and Rui Hachimura, Los Angeles also signed 7-footer Jaxson Hayes, big Taurean Prince, point guard Gabe Vincent, and swingman Cam Reddish.

With Hayes and Wood in the lineup, Davis should be able to play less physically taxing minutes in the middle than they did last season when the Lakers were without a real backup center due to Mo Bamba’s injury.
