Christian Watson Officially Ruled Out Of Sunday’s Game At Chicago Bears

Christian Watson won’t have a chance to atone for throwing the season-opening bomb at Minnesota last year.

Coach Matt LaFleur said following Friday’s practice that the Green Bay Packers’ big-play receiver has been ruled out of Sunday’s Week 1 game against the Chicago Bears. Watson participated in the first stretch but did not go out onto the field with his teammates for the week’s final session.

Romeo Doubs, the other supposedly veteran receiver on the squad, seems dubious. Doubts worked out for the second day in a row. Can he play? How effective will he be if he plays? And how many pictures? Before Sunday’s 3:25 p.m. kickoff, LaFleur will have to think about those issues.

“It was another good day,” he said. “Again, 48 hours away. Just got to keep building up and see where we’re at. So far, so good.”

The Packers’ five receivers versus Chicago will be Doubs, second-year receiver Samori Toure, rookies Jayden Reed, Malik Heath, and Dontayvion Wicks, assuming the trends continue. Bo Melton, a rookie, or Grant DuBose, a rookie, might both be promoted from the practice squad.

Doubs and Toure both caught 42 passes as rookies. The other players have never participated in a regular-season game.

None of those players can shatter a game like Watson can. Watson’s 46-yard touchdown run at Chicago in the team’s late-season victory the previous year sealed the victory. It was Watson’s sixth touchdown in four games at that time. Throughout the year, Doubs (three) and Toure (one) combined for four touchdowns.

When Watson missed games last season due to a hamstring ailment, Green Bay finished the season 1-2. LaFleur stated that the injury history will be taken into consideration when deciding Watson’s readiness to return, but he also cited Watson’s history of being a quick healer when he claimed it was a week-to-week ailment rather than a long-term problem.

David Bakhtiari, a left tackle, will start despite not having participated in a single practice snap. Bakhtiari stayed behind the exercise bikes in the Don Hutson Center after everyone else left for practice on Friday because he didn’t practice on Wednesday or Thursday.

It’s not like Bakhtiari has spent the entire week eating cupcakes while lounging on a couch. As he begins his tenth year, Bakhtiari can draw on a wealth of experience, or “banked reps,” as players and coaches like to say.
