Alan Williams Resigns As Chicago Bears’ Defensive Coordinator

The Chicago Bears announced on Wednesday that defensive coordinator Alan Williams has resigned.

“I value the NFL shield and all that it stands for and after taking some time to address my health, I plan to come back and coach again,” he added.

Williams, 53, has not been with the Bears since last week due to a “personal matter,” according to the team.

Williams’ attorney, along with the Bears, claimed that a Chicago allegation about police involvement at the team facility was untrue.

“He has tremendous respect for the Bears organization and he just though it was the time to handle this health issue and his personal matters,” Andrew M. Stroth, a sports attorney based in Chicago who is Williams personal attorney, told ESPN.

If there is no resolution with Williams, Bears coach Matt Eberflus will continue to call the defense this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. He took over calling the defense against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

In February 2022, not long after Eberflus was appointed head coach of the Bears, the team hired Williams. Williams served as the Indianapolis Colts’ safeties coach for four seasons when Eberflus served as the defense coordinator for the organization. After working there for 10 seasons (from 2002 to 2011) as a defensive backs coach, it was his second tenure with Indianapolis.

In 2012 and 2013, Williams served as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. He has been a coach for more than three decades.
