Teary-Eyed Will Grier Bids Farewell To Dallas Cowboys

Will Grier performed admirably during what are anticipated to be his final snaps for the Dallas Cowboys, serving as a showcase for the other 31 NFL teams.

After Dallas acquired quarterback Trey Lance in a Friday trade with San Francisco for a fourth-round pick, Grier entered the preseason finale with nothing to lose inside the arena. The fifth-year gunslinger was prompted to put on an inspired and refocused performance.

He was beaming after throwing for 305 yards and hitting the end zone four times, just one week after leaving the field in Seattle without exchanging a post-game handshake.

“At the end of the day I just relied on the fact that I know how to play football,” Grier said. “And I’m good at it. I knew when the game started, I could just play football, and that’s what I did.

What is perhaps Grier’s most impressive statistic? He completed the game without committing a turnover, and his completion rate was over 82 percent. He directed the offense with evident confidence, and his decision-making was definitely improved from his lackluster performance in Seattle.

Grier was teary-eyed in the locker room after the Cowboys’ 31-16 victory over Las Vegas to say goodbye to the team. Another illustration of the 28-year-old’s immense effort put into his final preseason performance.

“I think my play speaks for itself,” Grier said. “I’m a team-first guy…at the end of the day it’s a numbers thing. It’s just part of the job I signed up for. It’s hard, it’s tough, because you get close to people. But at the same time, I’m going to be just fine. Everybody is going to be fine.”

Even Dallas’ starting quarterback Dak Prescott, who directed the offense on Saturday night, had a lot to say about Grier’s outstanding conclusion.

“That man just played his ass off. That’s who Will is,” Dak said. “That’s who Will’s been since the time he’s been here. It was awesome that he got to go out there and put that performance on display and hope the rest of the league saw that and took notice.”

Grier’s next professional step is completely out of his control now that he has played all of his preseason snaps. After just acquiring Lance, it appears Dallas is still committed to having Grier leave, leaving it to the other NFL teams to decide whether they can benefit from his skills.

His performance on Saturday night could generate a lot of interest from other league players.
