Olga Carmona Learnt Of Father’s Death After Scoring Spain’s Winning Goal In World Cup Final

Olga Carmona’s World Cup-winning goal for Spain on Sunday turned out to be terribly bittersweet since, according to officials, she was informed after the game that her father had passed away.

In a statement, the Royal Spanish Football Federation expressed sympathy for having “to report the death of Olga Carmona’s father” and stated that Olga “learned the sad news after the World Cup final.”

“We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain,” the federation said. “We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football.”

Later on Sunday, Carmona herself came out.

“I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique,” she wrote on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “I know you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. Rest in peace, dad.”

According to a federation spokeswoman, Carmona’s father passed away on Friday following a protracted illness.

Spain defeated England 1-0 with to a goal by Carmona in the 29th minute, and La Roja held on to win its first Women’s World Cup title.

She lifted her jersey in celebration, revealing an undershirt with the word “MERCHI” inscribed in pen. She explained that it was a memorial for a close friend’s mother who had recently passed away.

“First of all, I want to say that this victory, this achievement, goes to the mother one of my best friends who has recently passed away,” she said, according to Fox Sports. “I celebrated the goal with her shirt and from here, I dedicate this to the whole family with all my love.”

Real Madrid player Carmona, 23, scored in the semifinals as well.
