Mackenzie Shirilla Bags 2 Concurrent Life Sentences For Fatal 2022 Crash That Killed 2

In July 2022, Mackenzie Shirilla, then 19 years old, was found guilty of murder for intentionally causing a car accident that killed her boyfriend and his friend. She was given two concurrent life terms for the killings.

Shirilla’s two concurrent life sentences, which Judge Nancy Margaret Russo imposed on Monday afternoon, each require her to serve a minimum of 15 years in jail.

The families of Davion Flanagan, 19, and Domonic Russo, 20, are still in shambles.

Dom and Davion were robbed of their futures, their hopes and their dreams,” said Christina Russo. “Mackenzie showed no mercy on Dominic, nor did she Davion. Only god at this time can have mercy on her soul.”

Many of the relatives of the two victims begged the judge to order that the sentences run concurrently and that Shirilla receive the maximum punishment of 30 years to life in prison during their impact statements.

“I understand that the pain in this room wants me to impose the harshest sentence,” said Judge Russo before announcing Shirilla’s sentence. “But I don’t believe that would be an appropriate sentence because I do believe that Mackenzie will not be out in 15 years.”

According to court documents, Shirilla had been accused of four charges of murder, four counts of felonious assault, aggravated vehicular homicide, narcotics possession, and having criminal equipment. She was adjudicated guilty on each count last week in a Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas.

“She just needed a second of fun for losing her whole world,” said Natalie Shirilla. “I am asking you for leniency because this was a tragic accident she does not remember.”

Shirilla apologized for the suffering she had brought about in her own words. Before she knew her destiny, the defense also provided letters of commendation for her behavior from the juvenile detention center.

“I am just so sorry,” said Mackenzie Shirilla. “I am heartbroken. I loved Dom and Davion. We were all friends, and Dom was my soulmate. I wish I could take all your pain away, and I am so sorry.”

On July 31, 2022, shortly after 6 a.m., the collision took place close to Progress and Alameda drives. Shirilla, 20-year-old Dominic Russo, and 19-year-old Davion Flanagan had to be freed from the car. Flanagan and Russo were declared dead at the spot, while Shirilla was transported to MetroHealth in Cleveland for treatment.

According to court documents, Shirilla crashed the car she was operating, and “did purposely cause the death” of the two teenagers.
