Leicester City cruised to victory as they started their Carabao Cup Campaign with a win over Burton Albion on the 8th of August, 2023.
Kelechi Iheanacho started the match over Jamie Vardy and he started making an impact from the first 30 seconds of the game, almost sending a header into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, Iheanacho flicked the ball home from Marc Albrighton’s cross from six yards with the outside of his left foot after getting in between Burton’s center-backs.
Early in the match, Albion’s major summer signing Cole Stockton limped off of the field from what looked like a groin injury.
In the 47th minute, Wilfred Ndidi scored a second for his team when Iheanacho broke down the left and cut back to Ndidi who side-footed into the top corner from 12 yards.
Albion tried to get back into the game. John Brayford did well to block an Iheanacho effort from inside the area with 18 minutes left, while Stockton’s replacement Josh Gordon twice shot wide from the edge of the box.
After the match, Leicester City’s new coach Enzo Maresca had this to say about his team’s performance.
“It had the potential to be difficult for us but we started well with the first goal. Then it got a bit more complicated as they changed and made it harder for us and we had to find solutions.”
“In the end, we are very happy because we continue improving with the ideas we are trying to get across and that is important. What we are looking for is very clear, even in the previous game.”
The Foxes’ debutant goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk enjoyed most of the game as his team remained in command.
