Jets QB Aaron Rodgers Caps Preseason Appearance With TD Pass To Garrett Wilson

At MetLife Stadium on Saturday night, Aaron Rodgers made his NFL debut for the New York Jets against the crosstown Giants. After a sluggish start, he had a great finish to his brief appearance.

The Jets led 7-0 after two series in which Rodgers completed 5 of 8 passes for 47 yards and a stunning touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson. Wilson caught all three of his targets for a total of 30 yards and a touchdown, enhancing their already strong teamwork in training camp.

“I’ve made a lot of throws like that over the years, but he does a good job, late hands I think is important because the DB (defensive back) is just waiting for him to just put his hands up,” Rodgers said about his trust with Wilson, via the team transcript. “So, I think he probably had some good late hands, but he naturally creates a lot of separation, so he makes it pretty easy to throw to.”

Since the deal was confirmed, and perhaps even longer given the numerous offseason speculations, Jets fans have been eager to meet Rodgers in person. Eventually, Rodgers provided them with their desired outcome.

Rodgers entered the field to a thunderous applause after the Giants’ opening drive ended in a punt. The Giants hosted Rodgers in his new stadium, thus it was technically a road game, but there were a lot of Jets supporters there.

All three of Rodgers’ initial completions were short as the Giants and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale applied early pressure to him. The Giants played aggressively in the final preseason game despite resting their starting lineup. It was a good test for the Jets’ criticized offensive line, which may have included Duane Brown at left tackle and Mekhi Becton at right tackle from Week 1.

On the Jets’ first third down, Rodgers was forced to throw the ball away after being thrown off balance by Oshane Ximines after being flushed out of the pocket by a blitz by newly acquired Giants’ trade player Isaiah Simmons, who was also making his new team debut.

When Rodgers regained possession of the ball, it was at the Jets’ 48-yard line. Rodgers seemed agitated after an overthrow to tight end C.J. Uzomah. However, that was immediately forgotten as Wilson drew a 22-yard pass interference call and Rodgers connected Wilson for the 14-yard touchdown two plays later.

Rodgers took a quick step back, flipped the ball off his back foot, and still managed to slip it past Gemon Green’s right ear and into Wilson’s hands despite the Giants’ tight coverage.

According to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo, the initial plan called for Aaron Rodgers to play “two or three” series before passing the ball to Zach Wilson. Rodgers played nine official snaps (ten if you include the penalty). His night was obviously finished after his touchdown dime.

Rodgers had a promising start to his career. The following time we see him will be in Week 1 in a Monday night game against the Buffalo Bills in prime time.
