Ansu Fati Close To Joining Brighton On Loan From Spanish Giant, Barcelona

Ansu Fati is willing to leave Barcelona before the transfer window ends this week, sources have told ESPN, and Brighton are putting together a challenging loan deal for the Spain forward.

Tottenham has spoken with Barcelona as well, although they are also interested in signing Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest.

In order to retain his connection to Barça, Fati, 20, is open to a season-long loan move to the Premier League, but nothing has been decided upon as of yet ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

It represents a sharp turnabout for Fati, who had previously resisted leaving the Catalan club this summer despite pressure from outside sources.

His father, Bori, his agent, Jorge Mendes, and Barça have all pushed for him to spend a year playing regular football somewhere else.

This week, Spurs and Chelsea were both mentioned in connection with Fati, but Brighton, led by Roberto De Zerbi, emerged as the favorites to seal a deal on Wednesday.

Fati has appeared off the bench in Barça’s first three games of the season, but since returning from many long-term injuries ahead of the 2022–23 season, he has found it difficult to secure a regular spot in Xavi Hernandez’s team.

He made his debut as a 16-year-old in 2019, but numerous knee and hamstring issues caused him to miss nearly two years of football between 2020 and 2022.

Even though he made 51 appearances last season, most of them as a substitute, and scored 10 goals, he was dissatisfied with the lack of starts.

Due to this, Fati’s father, Bori, called for him to leave the team earlier this year and expressed his displeasure with how Barça was treating Fati, who took over Lionel Messi’s No. 10 jersey.

Fati has a €1 billion release clause in his contract with Barça, which runs through 2027.

His potential departure might open the door for Barça to sign two more Mendes clients, along with Clément Lenglet’s loan move to Aston Villa, which sources tell ESPN will be completed on Thursday.

Barça is holding off on signing Manchester City right-back Joo Cancelo until they have freed up enough money in their LaLiga spending cap. Sources also confirm that they are still interested in Atletico Madrid striker Joo Félix.

Felix expressed his desire to join Barça earlier this summer, and should Fati go after Ousmane Dembélé left for Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month, Barça will seek to replace him before Friday.
