Activities Halted At Detroit Metro Airport Due To Heavy Flood

Thunderstorms on Thursday morning forced the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport to halt incoming planes after heavy rain the previous night created flooding that already partially obstructed access to the airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration has ordered a ground stop at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport until at least 11 a.m. ET.

According to the National Weather Service, three inches of rain poured on the airport during the course of around five hours, resulting in some flooding.

“Currently, travelers cannot access the McNamara Terminal due to flooding in the Dingell Drive tunnels. Customers with flights operating out of the McNamara Terminal are encouraged to contact their airlines with any questions about their flight status,” the airport said.

FlightAware reports that 15% of Detroit-bound flights have experienced delays and 9% have seen cancellations, while 9% of Detroit-bound flights have experienced delays and 8% have experienced cancellations.

According to its website, Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) is a significant hub for both Delta and Spirit and offers more than 1,100 flights daily.

The Great Lakes region is at higher danger of severe storms and flooding as a result of the rain.

From Ohio through Pennsylvania, there is a level 2 to 4 risk of flooding, and over 40 million people in the Great Lakes region, including Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland, are at risk from severe storms. More strong to severe storms are anticipated.
