Mandy Moore is being upfront about a health issue in her family.
The This Is Us alum shared a July 22 event that sent her family to several different doctors’ offices on social media. She claimed that Gus, her 2-year-old son with her husband Taylor Goldsmith, awoke that morning with an unusual rash, and doctors were unable to establish its origin right away.
“This sweet boy woke up with a crazy rash on Saturday am,” Mandy wrote alongside a picture of Gus on her July 28 Instagram story. “We tried to deduce what it could be and did anything to help him find relief from the itch.”
Gus was treated by a physician, dermatologist, and pediatric dermatologist, she continued, but despite all of that, the youngster “smiles and laughs like the rockstar he is.”
Thankfully, the skin disease was eventually recognized by doctors.
“Turns out it’s a viral childhood rash that just spontaneously appears called Gianotti-Crosti syndrome,” the 39-year-old wrote over an image of the toddler’s legs covered in red splotches. “It’s all over his legs and feet (ouch) and the backs of his arms but nowhere else.”
According to the National Institutes of Health, Gianotti-Crosti syndrome is an uncommon skin ailment that typically manifests in children as blisters on the legs, butt, and arms.
As the rash can only be treated with Benadryl and steroid cream, and it might possibly last 6–8 weeks, the Princess Diaries actress admitted that Gus still has a little bit of a healing journey ahead of him.
After reflecting on parenthood throughout the series, she concluded by saying, “All of that to say, this parenting thing is weird and hard and sometimes you feel so helpless (and yes, I’m ever so grateful it’s only an itchy skin condition).”
The Walk to Remember actress is also a mother to Oscar, popularly known as “Ozzie,” a 9-month-old son of her and Taylor.
She has also admitted that home life isn’t always simple because she has two boys under the age of two.
“Somedays I feel like we’re barely above water,” Mandy told E! News on the July 25 episode. “The potty training is intense, but we’re slowly but surely getting there. I love that someone told me, ‘It’s not an event, it’s a process.'”
The lovely relationship between her boys, especially the love Ozzie has for his older brother, helps to ease the situation.
“He is enamored with his brother, it is really sweet,” she revealed. “He just looks at him with awe and wonder all the time and is his biggest fan. No one makes him laugh more, smile more.”
